Ingredients

For the fries & smashburgers
  • 1 26 oz bag frozen crispy French fries
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper
  • Chedder Cheese sliced or shredded
For serving
  • Pickles whole or diced
  • Thinly sliced jalapeños
  • Onions diced or thinly sliced
  • Burger sauce

Equipment

  • Baking sheet, skillet or griddle, parchment paper, smash burger press or other flat-bottomed utensil for smashing the patties

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Spread the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake 20–25 minutes, flipping once (follow your bag’s instructions if they call for longer; 450°F gives extra crispiness). An air fryer works too.
  2. Roll the ground beef into four even balls. While the fries are cooking, heat your skillet or griddle on medium with a little oil. Once hot, place the burger balls onto the grill with a parchment paper square over each and smash down flat; you should hear a good sizzle when you do so.
  3. Remove the parchment paper and season the flattened patties with salt and pepper or your favorite burger seasoning.
  4. Cook patties for 3-5 mins until a good crust has formed and then flip. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until done.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheese or lay sliced cheese on patties and allow to melt, about 30 seconds.
  6. Assemble: lay cooked patties over crispy fries and top with your favorite burger toppings, pickles, onions, jalapeños, etc. Finish with a drizzle of your favorite burger sauce and enjoy!

Notes

Make it a build-your-own bar: set out the toppings and let everyone customize with caramelized or raw onion, chopped tomato, or jalapeños.
