Southworth Bros. Inc.
Seneca, OR
Jack and Teresa Southworth, along with their dedicated ranch team, operate Southworth Bros, Inc., a historic ranch located in Bear Valley near Seneca, Oregon. The ranch’s roots trace back to 1885, when William Sawyer Southworth, a sawmill owner, established a homestead in Bear Valley to supply hay for the horses and oxen used in his mill.
With the support of their mother Minnie, William’s sons, Ed and Webster, transformed the homestead into a thriving ranching operation. They added a store, post office, and stagecoach stop, which helped grow the ranch into a sustainable business.
Jack and Teresa assumed management of the ranch in 1978 and have continued the family legacy with a strong focus on land stewardship and livestock improvement. Their current practices emphasize rotational grazing with reduced grazing periods and extended recovery times to promote native perennial grasses. They also work to enhance cattle genetics to better align with the environmental conditions and
management strategies of Bear Valley.
Beyond ranching, Jack has a passion for local history, while Teresa enjoys gardening, quilting, and raising sheep. Together, they embody a deep commitment to both the land and the traditions of rural life.
