Healthy Homemade Sloppy Joes

A ranch house favorite, these joes are packed with flavor and easily come together! Classic, easy, go-to weeknight dinner that we are taking to the next level.
This version is easy, healthy and a sandwich you won't forget!

  • 2 tbsp ghee or olive oil
  • 1-2 tbsp garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup yellow onion, diced
  • ¼ cup red onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 lb Country Natural Beef Butcher's Blend Ground Beef
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp worstershire sauce
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

  1. Bring large cast iron skillet to medium-high heat.
  2. Add ghee or oil and swirl to coat the pan.
  3. Add garlic and move around the pan until fragrant, about 10-20 seconds.
  4. Add onions and diced bell pepper. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, allowing onions to soften.
  5. Add Butcher's Blend ground beef to the pan - move around the pan until beef is cooked through, about 5-10 minutes.
  6. Drain excess grease.
  7. Add dijon mustard, yellow mustard, ketchup, coconut sugar, soy sauce, kosher salt, pepper, tomato paste, chili powder, worcestershire sauce, and apple cider vinegar.
  8. Stir to combine.

Taste and Adjust

If you want sloppy joes more “saucy” simple add additional ketchup and tomato paste. Otherwise, adjust any salt or pepper, as desired.

Take your bun and place a slice of cheese (dairy-free or regular) on the bottom. Then add a scoop of the Sloppy Joe mix. On top of that add a few burger pickles, some pickled onions and a little extra dijon mustard. Then enjoy with good company!!!

  • Bun of your choice
  • Slice of cheese (regular or dairy-free)
  • Dijon mustard
  • Burger pickles
  • Pickled red onions

We've had plenty of sloppy joes in or day, but these ones goes home with the blue ribbon! The flavors in the mix and sauce are so good and then those toppings! we are adding in quick-pickled onions, pickles and a little extra dijon mustard (because, why not). They come together perfectly!

And, they can easily be PALEO, WHOLE30 friendly by serving with roasted sweet potato slices instead of buns!!

Pro Tips
  • Don't skip the toppings! They are worth it!!
  • Need it to be gluten-free? Use tamari instead of soy sauce, omit the worcestershire sauce and serve on a gluten-free bun.
